Prophylactic salpingectomy is the preventive surgical removal of the fallopian tubes, performed on people at elevated risk of ovarian cancer, particularly carriers of a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. It is based on evidence that many ovarian cancers actually begin in the fallopian tubes rather than the ovaries, so removing the tubes lowers that risk while, unlike removal of both tubes and ovaries together, leaving the ovaries in place to avoid surgical menopause and its associated risks of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis in younger women. A nationwide study found that removing both fallopian tubes was associated with about a fifty percent reduction in ovarian cancer risk compared with removing only one.
