Capsulotomy is a type of eye surgery in which an opening is made in the capsule surrounding the eye's crystalline lens. Most cataract surgery removes nearly all of the crystalline lens but leaves the peripheral or posterior lens capsule in place, retaining it to contain and position an intraocular lens implant. There are two forms, anterior and posterior capsulotomy, depending on which part of the capsule is opened.
