Photinos Panas (1832 to 1903) was an ophthalmologist born on the Greek island of Cefalonia, at that time part of the United States of the Ionian Islands. He took his medical degree in Paris in 1860 and spent the whole of his medical career in that city. He became the first professor of ophthalmology at the University of Paris, and in 1879 he set up the ophthalmology clinic at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris. In 1881 he joined Edmund Landolt and Antonin Poncet in founding the journal Archives d'ophtalmologie. His Traité des maladies des yeux of 1894 was regarded in its day as the best French textbook on eye diseases. He is credited with an operation for entropion in trichiasis and an operation that attaches the upper eyelid to the occipitofrontalis muscle to treat blepharoptosis; both are sometimes called Panas' operation in the medical literature.
