A hymenotomy is a medical procedure involving the surgical removal or opening of the hymen. It is often performed for an imperforate or septate hymen, or when the hymen is otherwise unusually thick or rigid, to create an opening that allows menstruation or comfortable sexual penetration, or to relieve pain or discomfort when inserting or removing a tampon.
