Lung Transplantation

Surgical Procedure

Lung transplantation, also called pulmonary transplantation, is a surgical procedure in which one or both lungs are replaced by lungs from a living or deceased donor, though a living donor can provide only a single lobe. Depending on the specific disease, a recipient may need only one replacement lung, while other conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, require both lungs to be replaced. The procedure carries inherent surgical risk but can extend life expectancy and improve quality of life for patients with end-stage pulmonary disease, and it is generally used as a treatment of last resort for severe, end-stage lung disease that has not responded to other treatment.
