Transplant Surgery

Whole organ and major tissue transplantation, where a donor organ or tissue replaces a patient's own failed one. This includes solid organ transplants such as heart, liver, kidney, lung, pancreas and intestine transplantation, the endocrine islet cell transplant procedure used in diabetes, and composite tissue transplants such as face, hand and uterus transplantation, together with the general term organ transplantation and cross-species xenotransplantation. Hair transplantation and other tissue grafts that move a patient's own tissue from one site to another on the same body are not organ transplants and are grouped elsewhere, under dermatologic surgery for hair and under the relevant body system for other autografts.
