Uterus transplantation is a surgical procedure that transplants a healthy uterus into a person whose own uterus is absent or diseased, as a treatment for uterine factor infertility, a condition in which a nonfunctional or absent uterus prevents pregnancy. The condition can be absolute, where a functioning uterus is entirely absent, or non-absolute, and its causes range from congenital uterine agenesis to conditions acquired later in life such as prior hysterectomy, uterine malformation, fibroids, adenomyosis, intrauterine scarring or uterine irradiation.
