Gestational diabetes is a condition in which a person without diabetes develops high blood sugar levels during pregnancy, generally with few symptoms. Babies born to people with poorly treated gestational diabetes are at increased risk of macrosomia, of hypoglycemia after birth and of jaundice, and if untreated the condition can also result in stillbirth; long term, the children are at higher risk of being overweight and of developing type 2 diabetes.
