A nephrectomy is the surgical removal of a kidney, performed to treat a number of kidney diseases including kidney cancer. It is also carried out to remove a normal, healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor, forming part of the kidney transplant procedure that supplies the organ to a recipient.

Origin YearErastus B. Wolcott performed the first recorded nephrectomy in 1861 in Wisconsin, but the patient died 15 days later; Gustav Simon's planned nephrectomy in Heidelberg on 2 August 1869 is credited as the first with a surviving patient, so sources differ on whether 1861 or 1869 marks the treatment's true origin.
