Percutaneous nephrostomy is an interventional radiology or surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening between the kidney and the skin, allowing urine to be diverted directly from the upper urinary tract. The renal pelvis is punctured under imaging guidance, typically after a fine needle has been used to obtain an antegrade pyelogram, and a nephrostomy tube may then be placed through the opening to allow drainage.
