Traditional and Historical Medicine Practitioners

Robert Maynard Giller was an American physician, acupuncturist, nutritionist and author, born in Chicago on 14 September 1942. He took his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1967, completed an internal medicine residency at Cornell University Hospital and served two years as a preventive medical officer in the United States Army Medical Corps. From 1972 he studied acupuncture at the College of Chinese Acupuncture in Kenilworth, England, and later in Hong Kong, and became licensed to practice it in the United States. In 1974 he opened a private practice in New York City specializing in preventive medicine, and he later led the Acupuncture Therapy Unit at the Brunswick Hospital Center on Long Island. His approach stressed the effects of stress on the body and the use of diet, vitamins and minerals. With Kathy Matthews he wrote Medical Makeover, Maximum Metabolism and Natural Prescriptions. He died in a car accident in New Jersey on 19 October 1996.
