Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

Surgical Procedure

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), also called coronary artery bypass surgery, is a surgical procedure that treats coronary artery disease by rerouting blood flow around a blocked or narrowed coronary artery using a graft taken from another blood vessel in the patient's body. The modern era of the operation began in 1964, when Soviet cardiac surgeon Vasilii Kolesov performed the first successful internal thoracic artery to coronary artery anastomosis, establishing the direct arterial bypass technique that underlies the procedure today. CABG remains one of the most common major cardiac surgeries performed worldwide for advanced coronary artery disease.
