Gastric Banding

Surgical Procedure

Gastric banding, most often performed as a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, places an inflatable silicone device around the upper portion of the stomach to treat obesity by limiting how much food a patient can comfortably eat at one time. The band can be tightened or loosened after surgery by adding or removing saline through a port placed under the skin, and the best known device of this kind, the Lap-Band System, received United States Food and Drug Administration approval in 2001.

FAQs

Can a gastric band be adjusted after the operation?

Yes; saline is added or removed through a port under the skin.

Yes. The band can be tightened or loosened after surgery by adding or removing saline through a port placed under the skin. That is how the degree of restriction on how much food a patient can comfortably eat is changed without a new operation.

When was the first gastric band placed?

The first band was placed in 1978; the Lap-Band System was approved in 2001.

The earliest report in the record is from 1978, when Wilkinson and Peloso placed a non-adjustable band of 2 cm Marlex mesh around the upper part of the stomach by open procedure. The adjustable laparoscopic design came later, and the best known device of that kind, the Lap-Band System, received United States Food and Drug Administration approval in 2001.
