Synovectomy is the surgical removal of the synovial tissue surrounding a joint, typically recommended to relieve a condition in which the synovial membrane becomes inflamed and irritated and is not controlled by medication alone. If uncontrolled, the resulting arthritis can lead to irreversible joint damage; the synovium encloses each joint and secretes a lubricating fluid that allows joint motions such as rolling, folding and stretching, and becomes warm, tender and swollen when it is inflamed.
