Tamponade is the closure or blockage of a wound or cavity by or as if by a tampon, especially to stop bleeding, achieved by packing an absorbent dressing directly into a wound or applying direct pressure with a hand or tourniquet. The same word also names a condition, such as cardiac tamponade, in which fluid collects in the pericardial sac and prevents the heart ventricles from expanding fully, a medical emergency distinct from the packing technique.
