Ultrasound enhanced systemic thrombolysis, also known as sonothrombolysis, is a method that uses ultrasound waves to mechanically break up thrombi, or blood clots, through vibration carried by the sound waves. Compared with systemic thrombolysis alone, using ultrasound carries a reduced risk of bleeding and improves heart function in cases of pulmonary embolism.
