Yasui Procedure

Surgical Procedure

The Yasui procedure is a pediatric cardiac operation for infants with severe obstruction of blood flow out of the left ventricle despite both ventricles otherwise functioning normally, as seen in interrupted aortic arch with left ventricular outflow tract obstruction or aortic atresia with severe stenosis and a ventricular septal defect, conditions often seen with DiGeorge syndrome. It combines the aortic repair used in the Norwood procedure with a shunt similar to that of the Rastelli procedure in a single operation, keeping the left ventricle connected to the systemic circulation while using the pulmonary valve as its outflow valve. This preserves two ventricle heart function as an alternative to committing the child to single ventricle physiology, and the technique was first described in 1987.
