Tung Ching Chang

Traditional and Historical Medicine Practitioners

Tung Ching Chang (1916 to 1975), commonly called Master Tung, was an acupuncturist and the first to teach the Tung acupuncture system outside the Tung family. He was born into an acupuncture family in Ping Du County, Shandong Province, China, began practicing at eighteen, used his skills to help fellow soldiers in the Nationalist army during the Second World War, and left permanently for Taiwan in 1949, where he opened a private clinic in the 1960s. His techniques had passed down only within his family; in 1962 he accepted his first outside disciple, Lin Ju Chu, in Taipei. His system is based on five zang and six fu channels rather than the traditional fourteen channels, with points classified by the five elements. When Taiwan began formally licensing doctors of Chinese medicine in the 1970s he was denied a license for lacking formal schooling and was forced out of practice, and he died in 1975. This entry records what he held and did, and is not medical advice.
