UCSF Medical Center is a teaching hospital of the University of California, San Francisco, operating across several sites in the city including Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay, and Mount Zion, and partnered with the UCSF School of Medicine and the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center as part of the university's UCSF Health system. It was established in 1907 at Parnassus Heights in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake, becoming the first hospital in the University of California system and prompting the creation of the UCSF nursing school to meet staffing needs; it opened with seventy five beds and has since grown to roughly eight hundred across its locations, with about six hundred at Parnassus alone. In recent national rankings it placed among the top twenty hospitals in the country, with particular strength in cancer care, neurology and neurosurgery, and geriatrics.
