Parathyroidectomy is the surgical removal of one or more of the usually four parathyroid glands, performed to remove an adenoma or hyperplasia of these glands when they produce excessive parathyroid hormone, a condition called hyperparathyroidism. The glands are usually located adjacent to the back surface of the thyroid gland, though their exact location varies, and imaging is often used beforehand to confirm the location of the abnormal tissue.
