Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, performed to treat conditions including uterine fibroids, abnormal bleeding, prolapse, and gynecologic cancers; a supracervical hysterectomy removes the uterus while sparing the cervix. American surgeon Ephraim McDowell is credited with the first recorded abdominal hysterectomy, performed in 1809. The operation can be performed through an abdominal incision, vaginally, or laparoscopically, and remains one of the most common major gynecologic surgeries.
