Uterine artery embolization is a procedure in which an interventional radiologist uses a catheter to deliver small particles that block the blood supply to the body of the uterus. It is used mainly to treat uterine fibroids and adenomyosis, offering women who wish to keep their uterus an alternative to hysterectomy, and it is also used to control postpartum hemorrhage and to treat uterine arteriovenous malformations.
