Origin The field organized around a dedicated professional body in the twentieth century: the American Society of Hematology held its first official meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in April 1958.
Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of blood, blood-forming organs and blood diseases, encompassing conditions that affect blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, bone marrow, platelets, blood vessels and coagulation. Hematologists diagnose and treat disorders ranging from hemophilia, sickle cell anemia, blood clots and other bleeding conditions to hematologic malignancies including leukemia, multiple myeloma and lymphoma. In most health systems it is practiced as a subspecialty of internal medicine, requiring fellowship training beyond a general internal medicine residency.
