Psilocybin therapy, or psilocybin-assisted therapy, is the use of psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient in psilocybin mushrooms, to treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, addiction, obsessive compulsive disorder and psychosis, and is one of several forms of psychedelic therapy under study. Psilocybin was popularized as a recreational psychedelic drug in the 1970s and was classified as a Schedule I drug by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, which restricted research into its medical use until the 1990s because of sociocultural fear of dependence on the drug. It has since become the most commonly researched psychedelic because of its safety and low potential for abuse or dependence, and clinical trials at universities have found evidence supporting its use in treating depression, post traumatic stress disorder and end of life anxiety.
