Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves irregularly in the coronal plane, with a rotational component, usually forming an S or C shape in three dimensions. The degree of curvature can remain stable or increase over time; mild cases often cause no problems, while more severe cases can affect breathing and movement and cause pain that tends to worsen with age. It is distinguished from kyphosis and lordosis, which are abnormal curves in the front-to-back, sagittal plane rather than side to side.
